Tipler is Professor of mathematical physics at Tulane University, and a specialist in global general relativity. In devising a possible mathematical model of the end of the universe, he has found that the central claims of Biblical theology are true, and are in fact straightforward deductions of the laws of physics as we now understand them. His book _The Physics of Immortality_ (New York: Doubleday, 1994) is intended to provide a physical interpretation of these claims that is at the very least *possible* under currently accepted physical law. It may thus be regarded as scientifically well-founded speculation. Dr. Tipler has titled his theory the "Omega Point Theory", for which this mailing list is named, after the cosmology of the French paleontologist and Jesuit priest Teilhard de Chardin, who called the ultimate goal of human evolution (as well as the evolution of the entire universe) the "Omega Point" in his book _The Phenomenon of Man_. As a physicist, Dr. Tipler chooses as a basic premise of _The Physics of Immortality_ that "Either theology is pure nonsense, a subject with no content, or else theology must ultimately become a branch of physics." (p. 3) Accordingly, his aim in this book is "the unification of science and religion" without denying the most fundamental claims of either. (p. ix) In his own words, "This book is a description of the Omega Point Theory, which is a testable physical theory for an omnipresent, omniscient, omnipotent God who will one day in the far future resurrect every single one of us to live forever in an abode which is in all essentials the Judeo-Christian Heaven. Every single term in the theory- for example, 'omnipresent', 'omniscient', 'omnipotent', 'resurrection (spiritual) body', Heaven- will be introduced as pure physics concepts. In this book I shall make no appeal, anywhere, to revelation. I shall appeal instead to the solid results of medern physical science; the only appeal will be to the reader's reason... "...the Omega Point Theory, including the resurrection theory, is pure physics. There is nothing supernatural in the theory, and hence there is no appeal, anywhere, to faith."
